Big Hole, Montana
National Battlefield, surrounded by the Land of Ten thousand Haystacks
Mon Jul 04, 2011 0 Comments
It’s not the Bear Paw Battleground where Chief Joseph said those words “From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever”, but it is one of the 38 sites that mark the plight of the Nez Perce Indians that span through Idaho and Montana. Here is where the US military failed to overtake the Nez pierce. After dropping by the visitor’s center you can take a number of hikes throughout the original battlefield...

Hiking Mesa Falls Trails
Fools following the marmots and deer
Wed Jul 20, 2011 0 Comments
© 2011 Brian Davidson/UnchartedPhotos by Brian and Michelle DavidsonThe thing about following game trails is this:Deer will go anywhere and climb up pretty much anything without giving a hoot or holler for who might follow them.It might not be deer. The trails we follow as we walk our way to and around Upper and Lower Mesa Falls on the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River may very well have been carved by generations of marmots, which are even mor...

From Spot No. 50 on the periodic table of the elements, nestled between indium and antimony, to the mythical Cassiterides Islands off the western coasts of Europe, where tin was supposed to be plentiful and pure enough to provide enough bronze to last medieval metallurgists for thousands of years. And while ...

Tue Apr 12, 2011 0 Comments
© 2011 Uncharted Story and photos by Andrew E. Clark    I'd been hearing about the Spiral Jetty for as long as I could remember and like most, I never quite understood what or where exactly it was or why it existed. This is all I knew: It was a spiral-shaped creation in a remote area of Utah's Great Salt Lake, built in the '70s, probably by some 'misunderstood' artist. I figured it was a prime...

A gem along Oregon's coastline
Mon Apr 18, 2011 0 Comments
Even now, the kids remind me that our 2009 trip to the Oregon coast is one of their favorites. And I would be compelled to agree, if only because of my passion for lighthouses -- something difficult to find in Idaho, I will add. And while this particular beach may not be a good one to run across barefoot, Yaquina Head Lighthouse, with its rocky, sea life replete coastline, is still among my favorite places along the Oregon coast.
